Friction Hinge Flip Up Safety Rails

1. Determine flip up height, should be 30” from the finished floor to the top of the flip up rail in the down position. Attach 18” x 18” x ¾” pressure treated lumber behind the wall and be sure the 4 holes in the bracket will match. Also make sure the blocking (treated lumber) is attached securely by wood studs or between wood studs.
2. Locate flip up with the mounting bracket flat against the wall. Assure that the flip up is level from side to side.
3. Mark the mounting holes. 
4. Drill the appropriate holes through the wall and through the ¾” pressure treated lumber. 
5. Fasten the mounting screws through the flip up bracket and through the ¾” lumber and attach with nuts and fender washers. ( not provided) 
6. Fasten and tighten.
   

Strength: Swing up grab bars can support loads in excess of 250 pounds ( 113kg) if properly installed, complying with barrier-free accessibility guidelines ( including ADAAG in the USA) for structural strength.

Caution: Grab bars are no stronger than the anchors and walls to which they are attached and, therefore, must be firmly secured in order to sustain the loads for which they are intended.

Installation: Provide concealed anchor device or backing specified or required in accordance with local building codes before wall is finished. Fasten grab bar to backing or anchor device. Concealed anchor devices and mounted screws are not included with these grab bars and must be specified as an optional accessory. Support columns are also available as an optional accessory.

Recommended mounting hardware:

• 4 – 5/16” x 3” pan head finish machine screws (stainless)
  
• 4 – 5/16” nuts (stainless)
  
• 4 – 5/16” fender washers (stainless)
